PREDICTIONS the UK is headed for another washout summer have been slammed as ‘scaremongering’ by a leading weather expert.
Dr Simon Keeling, who presents Farmers Guardian’s daily online programme Farmers Weather, said ‘headline grabbing’ stories were doing nothing but ‘depressing’ readers.
It comes after the Daily Express published a front page story this week predicting the country will be thrashed by a weather system similar to last year’s – the second wettest summer on record.
Forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, Jonathan Powell, said the beginning of June was looking ‘dire’ with no major change from then on.
He blamed the off-course jet stream allowing the Atlantic to dominate, meaning ‘weeks of wet and miserable conditions’.
But Dr Keeling urged farmers to look at shorter term predictions.
He said: “I don’t want people – farmers especially – to take everything they read because these stories are talking about long range weather forecasts and it is a very big assumption to say this summer is going to be exceptionally wet.
